Asimut

Asimut is a granular synthesizer for iPad and Mac, built around one idea: the order in which grains arrive is a sound of its own. One control, ORDEN, moves each player from strict pulse through the golden ratio to pure chance. Play it standalone, or as an AUv3 instrument in your host app.

Asimut is developed and published by VAAG Fabrikat.

iPadMacAUv3Coming to the App Store

Asimut Granular is in development. The iPad version will be in the App Store soon, and the Mac version follows. One purchase covers both. On your device, the app is called Asimut.

Key features

  1. 01ORDEN moves each player through four ways of placing grains in time: PULSE is periodic, CRYSTAL follows a Fibonacci chain, CLOUD spreads grains by the golden ratio, and GRIT is pure chance.
  2. 02Hold COMPARE and every player switches to random timing at the same density, so you hear what the order adds.
  3. 03Up to five players, each with its own ORDEN, rate (free or synced to tempo), grain length, position, spread, speed and direction, pitch quantised to a scale, frequency band, filter, level and pan. HARMONY voices them against each other.
  4. 04Every player has a seed in the grain field. Its place sets where the player sits in the stereo image and how bright it sounds. ORBITS moves the seeds for you, freely or in time with the tempo.
  5. 05Granulate your own samples, the built-in sounds or five colours of noise. Load a second source and blend the two with MORPH. FUSE shapes each grain, from separate clicks to one continuous body.
  6. 06A filter on every player, a performance filter and low cut on the mix, and an effect chain with modulation, character, delay, reverb and a compressor.
  7. 07Ten factory presets and your own, four scenes, and undo for every change.
  8. 08MIDI keyboards and controllers over USB or Bluetooth, and MIDI learn with soft takeover: a knob takes hold only when it reaches the control’s value, so the sound never jumps.
  9. 09Record what you play, or export 1 to 32 bars faster than real time, to WAV or AAC, with optional lo-fi.
